    Welcome to 7th Grade Language Arts!

    *Parents and Students:  Use the calendar at the left to learn what we did in class on a given day.  Find links to handouts, assignments, powerpoints, websites, etc. below. 

    Here are the supplies you will need to bring to Language Arts class each day:

    1.  Two spiral notebooks.  One will be used for reading and the other for writing.   

    2.  One 3-ring binder

    3.  Loose lined paper 

    4.  One blue pen, one black pen, and one red pen

    5.  One highlighter

    6.  Pencils and cap erasers

    7.  A book of your choosing at your reading level that interests you.  YOU WILL BE ASKED TO HAVE THIS WITH YOU ALL DAY IN ALL CLASSES!   Also have your individual reading log with you every day because you will be reporting your pages read on the class reading log.

    ****The library is open every morning before school and our class visits the library almost every Wednesday.

    8.  A dictionary and thesaurus will be available for you to use in class. Students should have access to a dictionary and thesaurus at home this year (see your teacher if you need to borrow these).  Students are also welcome to use www.dictionary.com

    9.  Mentor text should be brought to class each day.

    Book Talks - Your child needs to give 10 book talks this year....which equates to 2 or 3 each marking period.  Your child may sign up to give his/her book talk when he/she has finished a book they want to talk about with the class.  If your child does not sign up, then he/she will be presenting on an announced "Book Talk Day".  We will be doing a "Practice Day" the day before the actual Book Talk Day.  Your child's book talk scores for the marking period will be averaged and posted in the grade book at the end of the marking period.

    ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING UNIT

    Our Current Unit - We are now working on an argumentative writing unit.  This unit is fully aligned to the new Common Core State Standards where your child is expected to write a proposal essay. 

    Our learning target for this unit is:  I can write a proposal essay to define a problem and its effects (cause and effect), then suggest a detailed solution, arguing for the feasibility of this solution. 

    Learning the PROCESS of writing a proposal essay is just as important as the PRODUCT.  Here are the highlights of the process your child will be following:

    By generating - a solution for a school or neighborhood problem.

    By reading - model proposal essay(s), as well as articles, video, and websites about the selected problem and potential solution(s).

    By drafting - body paragraphs that define the problem, its effects, a proposed solution and explain why this solution will be effective.

    By researching - multi-media sources to find evidence that supports the effects of the problem and the feasibility of the proposed solution.

    By revising and editing - for clear statement of the problem and its effects, detailed solution, thorough explanation of how the solution will resolve the problem, effective use of evidence supporting the effects of the problem and feasibility of the solution, and proper spelling and word meaning.
