Kingsley Elementary School identified for THIRD year as a school that is "Beating the Odds!"

November 20, 2012

In 2009-10, Michigan began recognizing individual school success stories through the "Beating the Odds" initiative. This program recognizes Michigan schools that are finding ways to overcome identifiable risk factors associated with low student achievement, such as economic status, race and ethnicity, or proficiency with the English language. There are two methodologies employed to identify BTO schools. The first compares schools to like schools in terms of geographic setting, demographic makeup of student population, etc. and recognizes those schools outperforming similarly-situated schools. The second uses identifiable risk factors to project an expected level of student achievement and progress and then recognizes those schools that are outpacing their expected levels. A BTO school can be identified using one or both methodologies.

Kingsley Area Elementary School (5896)

has been identified as "Beating the Odds" for the 2011-12 school year. This is the third consecutive year that Kingsley Elementary School has been identified as "Beating the Odds" school.

Congratulations, all 2011-12 BTO schools will be recognized at the November 13, 2012 meeting of the State Board of Education (SBE). Designation as a BTO school means Kingsley Elementary School will be added to the list of Reward Schools for the 2011-12 school year (Note: Kingsley Elementary was ranked in 2012 at the 95% percentile and was already identified as a reward school). Reward Schools consist of schools in the top five percent statewide in terms of student proficiency, top five percent in terms of student improvement, or schools that are "Beating the Odds."

The Reward School designation is part of Michigan’s new statewide accountability system authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility request approved by the U.S. Department of Education. More information will be forthcoming about recognition and other opportunities that will be extended to Reward Schools during the current school year.
